The first iPads in airline lounges happened this week at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, as KLM installed tables of the gadgets inside of their Crown Lounges. They even managed to replicate the clear plexi iPad display bases used in Apple stores.

Unfortunately you will have to be a KLM frequent flyer with club access or fly on a business or first class ticket in order to touch these, but I think we all know that a table of 8 iPads would just not work in a general boarding area with hundreds of people. So…what airline lounge is next?

Check your wallet. Is there a Bank of American credit or debit card in there? If so, then you’ve got a ticket to enter over 120 museums around the country for free during the first weekend of each month through December 2010.

It’s a new program from the Bank called “Museums on Us,” and it’s actually pretty brilliant, with a surprising selection of very good museums included in the free days. All you need to enter the museums is your Bank of America card and another photo ID, and you’re in—but sadly it’s just for the cardholder, no +1 included.

The next weekend you can take advantage of the free admission is this weekend, and you can find a list of all of the included museums here. Still, we picked out a few of our favorite, after the jump.

With over-the-top resorts, year-round sunshine, killer shopping, picturesque beaches, and the world’s tallest building, Dubai quickly became the celebrity destination of choice.
Not only were the Beckhams and Jolie-Pitts falling all over themselves to jet-set to the Persian Gulf, many were even investing in real estate there.
Well, until the government went public with their $80 million worth of financial woes.
Now that Dubai is donezo, where will the celebrities go to hide away from the unwashed masses? Morocco.

Just this past weekend, a bunch of A-listers jetted to Marrakesh to celebrate the opening of a Chopard boutique at the La Mamounia Hotel. Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom, Salma Hayek, Miranda Kerr and Juliette Binoche were just a few of the guests in attendance. Could this signify a renaissance of the ’60s bohemian hot spot? [Celebitchy]

Here are some “now” destinations where celebrities will be heading in 2010.

Croatia: The civil war is long over and celebs are rediscovering what tourists knew in the 1980s. Croatia — on the Adriatic arm of the Mediterranean — rivals other European seaside areas with beaches, sailing, and superb cuisine that’s attracted superstars like Steven Spielberg, Andre Agassi, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, and Sharon Stone.

Turks and Caicos: Funny name, amazing islands. Since the opening of a handful of luxury resorts in the ’90s, this British West Indies 40-island archipelago has been working hard to make tourists forget about its shady past as a drug-smuggling hotbed. The exquisite beaches have called to Donna Karan, Barbra Streisand and Britney Spears.

South Africa: With the World Cup in Cape Town fast approaching, tourists are running to score a vacation here. Just ask Oprah, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian.
Bora Bora: One of the 118 islands that make up French Polynesia, Bora Bora is making celebs skip Tahiti because of its coral gardens and lavish spas. “Couples Retreat” was filmed there if you need a visual. Janet Jackson, Pierce Brosnan, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz can’t all be wrong.

Kenya:
Perfect weather, top-of-the-line accommodations, and scarcity of local media make this African country the perfect place to hide out. Bill Gates, Naomi Campbell, Serena and Venus Williams, and Oprah have all slipped under the radar here.
Whistler, British Columbia: Sure, we know celebs are oot and aboot every winter in Aspen, but this year folks like Sandra Bullock and Harrison Ford may be taking their expensive skis and snowboards to Whistler, BC. Oh yeah … and the 2010 Winter Olympics will be there as well.

The Frisky

Woo-hoo! Another victory for the modern traveler as Amtrak has named this the year of free WiFi aboard their Acela trains. To tell you the truth, we knew this was coming, even that it would be free, but we didn’t know when it would be completed or if we could even count on it.

Well we can count on it! Amtrak announced that installation of WiFi on the Acela trains (which are the express routes on the East Coast) will be completed by March, as part of a celebration of the Acela’s tenth anniversary of service. Other upgrades due for the trains include “leather seats and improved tray tables and power outlets.” Score!

But who knows when we’ll get to try out the WiFi and outlets; the Acelas are too damn expensive. Yeah right like we’re paying $100 for a one-way to Boston when a WiFi and outlet-equipped BoltBus takes almost the same time and costs around $30. Keep trying, Amtrak, but we’re proud of your achievements thus far.

Protecting your Baggage

While living amongst “towers and towers” of stolen luggage taken from the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport must have been (insert sarcasm font) without a doubt a truly glamorous life (end sarcasm font), luggage thieves Keith and Stacy King will now have to answer to 45 different counts theft, burglary and trafficking in stolen property.

The good news is that Sky Harbor has begun doing random luggage checks as well as increase video surveillance and patrols in the baggage claim area. Still, here are some quick common sense tips to help you protect your luggage from airport thieves. You may think this is a bit of overkill but then again, you probably paid at least $15 to check your bag, so why not see that it gets to you safely?

1. Try not to check a bag. Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work.” We say, “Make it work in an approved carry-on bag.”

2. Go directly to the baggage claim. Don’t dillydally after getting off the plane, no matter how badly you want a taste of Pinkberry. Go downstairs and wait for your bag to arrive.

3. Sew a piece of identification inside your bag. Thieves will rip the ID tags off the handle of your suitcase right away but if you can somehow mark the inside of your bag as your property, then you will have an easier time identifying it if it does get stolen.

4. Leave the LV trunk at home. Don’t use your Louis Vuitton or fancy Alexander McQueen luggage if you have to check bags. Yes, we know you want to impress your fellow passengers but potential thieves might take your expensive luggage tastes to mean that there are expensive items inside as well.

5. Keep those you love close to you. If you’re traveling with VIPs–Very Important Possessions–such as jewelry, iPods, laptops, cameras, etc., do not check them. Make sure these valuables are in your carry-on or on your person.

6. Always doublecheck your baggage claim ticket. This way you can spot a mistake on your luggage route before you land at your destination. If the airport can’t change the bag around in time, you can at least make them aware that the bag needs to be rerouted so it’s not circling the baggage carousel alone in a different airport from yours. Also, if more airports start beefing up their baggage claim security and begin doing random luggage checks, you’ll need this piece of paper to take your suitcase with you.

Two kinds of Luggage

Many of you know Peter’s airline baggage philosophy: “There are two kinds of luggage. Carry-on and lost.”  As a result, Peter has checked only about three bags domestically in the last 10 years. His solution? Ship it.  Yes, it’s going to cost you some money, but it will save you at least two hours of aggravation.

Here’s how it breaks down: you stand in the mile-long line at the ticket counter; even if you try to save time by checking in electronically, you still have to wait for an available agent to tag and weigh your bags.  Then, you schlep your luggage over to the TSA inspectors, where there’s usually crowd of bewildered-looking travelers hovering protectively over their bags.  Then, assuming your luggage even makes it onto your flight, you hike down to the baggage carousel and wait for them to show up.   If they don’t, it’s another lengthy process of filling out paperwork and then going to your hotel to hope for the best.

After the foiled terrorist plot in London back in August 2006, the subsequent liquid ban forced passengers to check their bags just so they could carry their own perfume, lotion and duty-free Black Label. And since then, the number of mishandled bags has skyrocketed.

According to the Aviation Consumer Report from U.S. Department of Transportation, in July 2007, the number of mishandled bags on reporting airlines was 466,250. (“Mishandled” is defined as “lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered”). In July 2006, before the liquid ban, it was 366,447. That’s more than 27 percent!

For the record, in August 2007, there were 437,141 reported cases, with United Airlines leading the pack with 29,331 mishandled bags. The best of the bunch was Aloha Airlines, with 1,375 mishandled bags that month. Click here for those reports: http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports

If you’re traveling through London, it gets even worse—you can only carry on ONE bag, not two. And British Airways has been named the worst culprit among all 24 airlines in the Association of European Airlines. In 2006, BA misplaced or completely lost 23 bags for every 1,000—the worst performance among all member airlines. Between January and June of 2007, BA lost bags of more than 550,000 passengers (note, that’s lost, not damaged or pilfered).

And if your bags are lost, don’t expect great compensation. Airlines have a domestic liability limit of $3,000 per ticketed passenger (NOT per bag) and, under the 1999 Warsaw Convention, the international liability is $9.07 per pound up to $640 per bag.

So, whether you’re a business traveler or a family of five heading to Disneyworld for a week, shipping your luggage can be a time-saver that’s worth the extra bucks.

Over the past few years, there has been a proliferation of luggage-shipping services. You may be familiar with some companies that initially focused on shipping sports equipment like golf clubs and skis. These services actually use the same shipping methods as the rest of us—FedEx, DHL, etc., but will take care of the dirty work for you. They’ll pick up your luggage, drop it off at your destination, and handle details like filling out airbills, plus they may offer delivery guarantees and insurance policies.

Luggage Forward

The Boston-based company has reported that bookings in the fourth quarter of 2006 increased by 500 percent! If your item arrives late, the company will waive the shipping charge and cover up to $500 per piece for expenses that arise from the delay (such as purchasing new clothes, toiletries, etc.) Each item shipped comes with $500 of coverage, but you can purchase additional coverage up to $10,000. 866-416-7447, www.luggageforward.com

Luggage Club

Although they haven’t released any statistics, the folks at the Luggage Club have stated that business “is going very nicely” over the past year. Once you schedule a trip, the company will mail or email you shipping labels and any appropriate paperwork (you just have to sign). Sports Express

Sports Express has recently acquired a few other luggage shipping companies, like Virtual Bellhop and Luggage Express, to become a leader in the luggage shipping industry. Pre-printed airbills can be faxed or emailed to attach to your bag. Each item is insured for $500, and you can purchase additional insurance up to $5,000. If your luggage is delayed, Sports Express will provide you with compensation to replace the items you can’t live without until your bags arrive. 800-357-4174, www.sportsexpress.com.

Luggage Free

Luggage Free will pick up your bags at a specified picks up at a specified time from anywhere in the United States including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Pickup is also available in Canada and select destinations in Western Europe. Shipping time is usually two days for domestic travel by air, but can take as much as seven to nine business days for Canada and Europe. The cost is $1.50-$7 per pound, depending on the location and delivery speed, with a $40 pickup fee. 800-361-6871, http://www.luggagefree.com.

So how do the prices of luggage shipping services measure up against more standard shipping options?

If you choose not to ship your luggage, here are a few tips on traveling right:

If you opt against travel insurance, which often includes lost luggage in the coverage, consider something called “excess valuation.” It’s a little-known insurance policy for your bags that you can buy at the airport. For both domestic and international flights, you can pay about $1 for every $100 ofcoverage; so $5,000 of coverage will cost just $50.

This may sound obvious, but it’s an important rule: Don’t check items that            You need within the next 24 hours. That includes medicine, important   documents or even clothing.

Never pack valuables. If you look closely at the airlines’ contract of carriage, they are not liable for items such as cash, electronic equipments, cameras,computer software, jewelry, art, some types of documents, or even life-saving medicine.

Don’t just put your name and contact information on the luggage tag. Those can be ripped off too easily. Put your information on the inside of the bag.

Take a picture of your bag’s contents. Your cell phone is perfect for this, as you  can keep it on you at all times.

Place a copy of your itinerary inside your bag. Put your name and address on the inside of your bag as well as the outside and include a copy of your itinerary just in case the baggage tag gets torn off.

Look at the contents of your luggage before you leave the airport. Once you leave, it’ll be that much harder to claim lost items.

If your luggage is lost, go to the baggage claim area and fill out a form immediately. Make sure that you get the name of the agent helping you and the direct phone number to that office. Don’t let them give you the 800 number.

This will make it that much easier to follow up, early and often. If your bag is lost and you need to purchase new clothes, toiletries, etc., keep your receipts! You may get reimbursed, depending on your class and frequent-flier status, but that’s impossible without proof of purchase.
